So I’ve been under an above average amount of stress recently - oh woe is me - but throughout the week I was reminded of how good people can be. Two days ago, I was crying at the back of my work’s parking garage and watched as a lawn service worker take an unopened can of coke from his lunch in his truck and give it to me. Texas summers can be gruesome for those who work outdoors, and giving someone your cold drink is a sacrifice. Then today, having another bad day, I’m at Cafe Express, and the manager comes over to me and says, “I can tell you were having a bad day” and brings me a dessert. These acts reminded me of that old quote from Teddy Roosevelt -
"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."
You may not be able to fix someone’s problems, but you can do a random act of kindness that can remind them of the good things in life. A coke and a $5 dessert may not add up to much, but it meant a lot to me.
